Intel Wants to Ditch Cables, Talks up Wireless PCs with no Wires
Intel took the stage at this week’s Computex trade show in Taiwan to talk up a cable-free future for PCs. This time Intel really wants to completely eliminate wires from computers, and is working on a series of wireless technologies to make that a reality in the coming years (hopefully next year). This new technology will be allowing wireless display, docking, and charging features to roam free as part of its next-gen Skylake platform.

What actual changes are required to Ditch Cables, Wireless PC’s?
So, this time PC’s new range will be away from bundle of power cords and other connectors to share and /or transfer the data but will going to be completely wireless with all of its features and performance (speed). PCs are on the way to a “true no-wire” experience, and Intel is working on technologies to remove the clutter of power cords, display connectors and peripheral cables, said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president, and general manager of the PC Client Group at Intel, during a speech at the Computex trade show in Taipei.
Intel’s hoping for a completely wire-free PC by 2016 for which Intel will deliver a reference design of a Core processor code-named Skylake — which will succeed the next generation Broadwell chip — that will enable wireless docking, charging, display and data transfers. Intel wants to eliminate all wires from desktops with WiGig technology, which is three times faster than the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology.
Note: according to some old newz regarding Robotics and Laptops, Wireless Powering Modules have been designed to support low power consuming devices, but Intel to expand the technology and use it now in the field.
The WiGig wireless connection will connect desktops to displays, and also enable wireless keyboards and mice, Skaugen said. Intel is developing WiGig modules for laptops, desktops and high-resolution displays. WiGig has the potential to replace HDMI and DisplayPort technologies, and wireless modules could be integrated in PCs as early as next year, Dell already offers a WiGig dock as a bridge between monitors and PCs and next step to a dock is to get the WiGig modules inside the computers, Skaugen said.
Earlier this year, the A4WP joined forces with the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) to streamline wireless charging, each adopting the others specifications and collaborating on an open network API. Learn more about the A4WP & Rezence in the video below.
What Differences Intel will arise in your next PC with no wires?
Imagine powering up devices without wired chargers and/or other sources but with a wireless connection would be like a Magic.
The ability to easily wirelessly charge a laptop, smartphone, or accessory marks a powerful shift, untangling us from the wires that have become a part of our everyday lives,” Peter Hortensius, Lenovo’s CTO, said in a statement.
“Wireless power is about more than charging a phone on a pad. Flexibility, in both power and placement, are key to expanding wireless charging beyond a niche,” said Kamil Grajski, president of the Alliance for Wireless Power. “Extending Rezence to include laptops, tablets and peripherals is a necessary step towards a wire-free and universal charging experience for everyone.”
Skaugen showed a laptop being charged wirelessly when placed on a table. The screen got brighter as the laptop got closer to the table, indicating that the PC was being wirelessly charged. Skaugen also showed a Lenovo Yoga laptop with wireless charging.
Well, Wire-Free Computing is not the only criteria of Intel but also PC’s with 3D cameras will ship by the end of this year, Skaugen said. The 3D cameras will be able to go deeper inside images and track depth, similar to how human eyes do. The depth images will help track movement, recognize human emotions, or even track down reading habits. It is part of Intel’s perceptual computing effort, in which sensory input makes human interaction with the computer easier.
Assumptions, Reviews and Feeling with No Wires Technology
Do we really need all electronics and gadgets to have wireless connectivity even charging features? Of Course, we would love to have that as there would be no need to carry chargers and our Smartphones and Laptops would easily be charged without physical connections.
On the other hand, my mind suspects that how much time would it will take to transfer current from source to gadgets and/or really can charge flow without means of wires (As we learned energy changes it forms but changes step by step) ? How will energy (current) going to flow without means? Will see in future as above “Skaugen showed a laptop being charged ……… with wireless charging”
What could be the cost of such technology and services and most important about their reliability, availability, maintenance and compatibility with devices? There are few more things to find and think but the easiest way is to wait till Intel’s deadline and see what they will seriously going to provide.
Last but not the least, will this technology will going to consume more energy then the wired connections or a negotiable difference or even at the same range the wired connection works on… I mean to run a 60W item what will be the actual supply used in the whole process.
